The Florida Indian Wars (1835 – 1842) began with the murder of an Indian agent at Fort King. During the Second Seminole War, December 28, 1835, Major Francis Dade led a column of 108 US army soldiers to relieve a detachment at Fort King. The troops were surprised by an ambush of a very strong Seminole Force near Bushnell. The only survivors were Major Dade, two soldiers and Major David Moniac USMA 1822, a Creek Indian and the first Native-American graduate of the Military Academy.
These four survivors as well as other casualties of the war were re-interred under three coquina stone pyramids in a ceremony marking the end of the conflict. This established the St Augustine National Cemetery in August of 1842.
